Feels Like a Recession

Without the working man, or woman a terrible thing happens: Nothing. What is the Government doing about it?

The Coalition say they will not spend their way out of this mess, but in actual fact they are spending their way into it. Debt if the growth forecasts are to be believed will be higher in 2015 when this government has gone, than when it took over.

The governments answer is more cuts which will put more people out of work, and increase government expenditure. The proposed increase in fuel duty of 4p per litre, would have fuelled inflation, and pushed prices higher, as well as pushing more businesses into liquidation. More people out of work, means more benefits to be paid out, less tax revenue, higher prices, higher inflation, and further tax rises and government borrowing.

We may not be in recession right now, but it certainly feels like it. Read More

Camerons Biggest Blunder Yet

When Cameron turned his back on Europe it was the blunder of a lifetime said MEP Guy Verhofstadt a former Belgium premier.

Joseph Daul a French MEP said Britain should be stripped of its £2.7billion rebate, as a punishment.

Nicolas Sarkozy said “Britain will pay for this, and pay dearly”:

Other comments were equally derogative : “When you are invited to the table, you are either a guest or the menu” “There is one golden rule in politics, You only walk away if you are sure others will follow”

The EC head Jose Manuel Barroso said “Britain stance in Brussels had made compromise impossible. The Lib-Dems are saying that Cameron should have discussed his strategy with ministers before he travelled to Brussels.

The EU had set a deadline to come up with a solution to the immediate problems. A meeting was held yesterday to work out the response to their problems, Nearly 10 hours of talks could not produce an agreement involving all member states. Instead, the 17 members of the eurozone will work on a separate deal outside EU treaties. They will be joined possibly by nine other countries, the EU statement said, leaving the UK as the only exception.

The EU came up with the idea that a new treaty would be drafted, which required all member states to reduce their sovereign debt, and keep it down, otherwise sanctions would be imposed. The idea seems to be a bit self defeating,

A Tragedy

The deaths of a 48 year old couple from Warwickshire, was reported by the ‘Metro’ on Wednesday the 9^th of November. They were found lying side by side on the 3^rd of November in their run down council house, after they had given up the struggle to live on just £57.50 a week.

The couple had been subjected to a series of health and benefits cuts, which left them walking to a soup kitchen six miles away, every day to collect free vegetables, which they cooked on a camping gas stove.

The EU and Greece

The EU problems, compounded by the uncertainty of the Greek position, could help push the UK into a double dip recession and possibly the rest of the world.. The instability and uncertainty of the EU and the Euro have made many companies wary of bidding for contracts where payments are made in the Euro.

Last month we had two very large contracts we were asked to quote for, normally we would spread the risk by asking other companies to take on part of the contract with us. With the problems and uncertainties associated with the EU and the Euro, we couldn’t manage to find enough partners willing to participate.

Greece exasperated the problem when the Greek Prime minister decided to throw a spanner in the works, and have a referendum on the agreed bail out package, and Greece’s membership of the Eurozone.

The EU had agreed to ask the banks who had provided the bail out to Greece to write off 50% of the loan, and to lend more to Greece. China , among others was approached for money, as well as Russia. When it became apparent that maybe Greece would default on the full debt, investors started to get cold feet.

The NHS

The House of Lords are still debating the NHS bill. Their biggest problem is that there will be no-one in overall control. This has traditionally been the Minister of Health; the government don’t want to be seen as being in charge of demolitioning the NHS, which is why they won’t let a minister be in charge. The changes the government are forcing on the NHS, will not be monitored, another reason why the Lords won’t pass the bill. The government want the patients to be in control, although it will be selected doctor’s practices which will run the NHS. Most practices over the years have built up lucrative associated businesses, first it was their investment in private care homes, after which they set up private clinics. The fear is that they stop referring patients to the NHS for routine operations, but will recommend their own private clinics. The government are encouraging private imitative in the NHS, but will not supervise, or monitor these.

Highest unemployment for 17 years

Following on from the shocking news that almost 1 in 4 UK children are living in poverty, an announcement that unemployment has rocketed up in the three months to August by a phenomenal 110,000, now standing at 2.57 million, a 17 year high . This figure includes 992,000 young people , the so called lost generation.

The IFS said that in 2010 , 2.5 million children and 2.1 million working-age parents were trying to exist in "absolute" poverty.

The news that approximately 1 in 4 children are below the poverty line in the UK is disgusting , the IFS expect another 600,00 children will be pushed into poverty by the governments inaction during the next 2 years, making in total 3.1 million children will be existing in “absolute” poverty by 2013

Tories Love Libdems -Hate Ed Balls

George Osborne is already blaming the proposed union strikes and the Euro zone for future failures. The unions are striking because their pensions will decrease as their payments into their pension plans increase, and they say it will all go straight to the treasury.

Is that where the £3 trillion is coming from?

Both Cameron and Osborne showed their fear of Ed Balls at the conference. It was pathetic the way they had to use snide remarks to try and rejuvenate their party faithful. Childish behaviour such as this doesn’t help the party in the electorate’s mind, rather it helps to cement the opinion held by the British public, that the coalition have no idea what they are doing, and the fact that that the party faithful encouraged their leaders to make a fool of themselves, shows the collective mentality of the conference delegates to be lacking.

We heard today that allegedly a convicted criminal could not be deported, under the Human Rights Act, because he had a cat. At least the party faithful didn’t believe it, or accept it as a valid reason to scrap the human rights bill.

Austerity for 10 Years?

The way UK politics are going it looks as though we will be suffering for the next 10 years. The coalition will not make any attempt to generate jobs. Jobs generate income for the Treasury, in order to bring down debt.

The NHS is rapidly being degraded; terminally ill cancer patient and others in a similar position have received letters telling them their benefits will be cut, even though it will be next year before the bill is put before parliament. Waiting times are going up and up, unless you go private. Dentist are a rare breed now with even the emergency NHS doctor service being over-run with people complaining they can’t get an answer on the phone lines for days.

The total amount extra jobs created in the last 12 months is only 24,000, which is roughly the equivalent of 1 in 9 immigrants getting a job.

Growth is word the coalition doesn’t understand, they seem content to let the country degenerate and blame it on the Euro problems.

European governments appear to lack a concerted joint plan of action, at least in the last recession we did have Gordon Brown who rallied governments round to stop the world’s banks collapsing.

Cameron v Clegg

In a speech at the London school of Economics, Nick Clegg re-iterated the coalition pledge to continue with the cuts, but showed a division in the coalition by admitting that times had changed over the last few months, with a continued rise in the jobless total, now standing at a massive 2.51 million, almost 1 in 12 of the workforce out of work, inflation up to 4.5% and growth only just measurable at 0.02%. His answer to this was to bring forward high cost infrastructure plans to build roads, rail and improve the broadband service for the UK. The condition for bringing this plan forward was that for every £1 the government put in, private enterprise would put in £5.

Later on in P.M.’s question time, Cameron stated that you can’t spend money in order to create jobs and grow the economy.
